Educated in Czernowitz, his musical education began in a synagogue choir. In 1924 he moved to Berlin to continue his musical studies. His opera debut was in Berlin in 1929, his film career began in 1931 with "Liebesexpress". His most famous movie was the 1933 film "Ein Lied geht um die Welt." He lived in Berlin, Vienna, Brussels, Amsterdam, and Nice and died in a Swiss internment camp for illegal refugees in 1942.
