Tommy Coster was born in northern California on June 10, 1966. He started playing keyboards at age 4 and co-wrote his first song with Carlos Santana at age 11. By the time he was 12 he had received his first gold record for his work on Santana's Moonflower album. At age 19 he attended Berklee Collage of Music in Boston for 2 years majoring in Jazz Composition. He moved to Los Angeles in 1992 and continued his career as a studio musician and composer.
