The marital strife of middle class Romans Andrea and Nina, who live in an inner-city high rise rife with gossip, is shown especially as it affects their only offspring, preschool aged Pricò. That strife centers primarily on Nina's infidelity with her extremely persistent lover Roberto, that infidelity partly out of Andrea's focus on work at her expense. It is only exacerbated by her weakness when it comes to Roberto, who she often prioritizes over Pricò. Despite having a live-in housekeeper Agnese devoted to Pricò, Andrea knows he would not be able to care for Pricò on his own, his own circle, especially of extended family, who in turn prioritize their own lives over Andrea and thus Pricò. Pricò, in turn, is not oblivious to what is going on between his mother and this other man, Pricò dealing with it in the way a child would in the different circumstances he finds himself in.
