In Malaysia in the 1950s, a European merchant is obsessed with finding a treasure to secure his daughter's future. His dreams fall victim to the pressure of his own greed, which becomes a torment. Added to this is the oppressive English domination that dominates the country - and brings ruin to the remote village in which he lives.
