Proficient as a jazz bassist, George Duvivier first studied violin, switching over to the string bass as a teenager. He was studying at New York University when he was drafted for service in the United States Army; he organized bands at Camp Shelby, Mississippi and Fort Warren, Wyoming during his enlistment.
